Mobile Workstations sind leistungsstarke Notebooks, die für den professionellen Einsatz gedacht sind. Besonderes Augenmerk legen die Hersteller dabei auf Zuverlässigkeit, Standfestigkeit und ein hohes Maß an Konfigurations- und Erweiterungsmöglichkeiten. Kernbestandteil einer Workstation ist dabei immer auch eine professionelle Grafikkarte. Diese unterscheidet sich durch ein spezielles Bios und optimierte Treiber von den sonst üblichen Grafikchips in Notebooks. Das sorgt für eine besondere Leistungsfähigkeit, Genauigkeit und Zuverlässigkeit im Zusammenspiel mit professioneller Software. In unserem Testmodell kommt eine relativ selten anzutreffende Lösung von AMD zum Einsatz. Während man in vielen mobilen Workstations meist einen Nvidia Quadro Grafikchip antrifft, sind HPs EliteBooks der Workstation-Sparte durchweg auch mit AMD-FirePro-Grafiklösungen auswählbar.

Das HP EliteBook 8570w LY550EA gehört zu der Gruppe der günstigeren Einstiegskonfigurationen und ist deshalb lediglich mit einer konventionellen 500-GB-Festplatte, 4 GB RAM und einer Intel Core i5-3360M Zweikern-CPU ausgestattet. Neben den üblichen Workstation-Qualitäten sollen beim Testmodell insbesondere die AMD FirePro M4000 Grafik und das FullHD-Display für Interesse sorgen. Zudem ist der aktuelle Testgerätepreis mit etwa 1500 Euro im Klassenvergleich recht attraktiv und unterbietet so manches Konkurrenzmodell.

Die Kapitel Ausstattung und Eingabegeräte haben wir in diesem Bericht nicht nochmals aufgegriffen, können aber vom Test des HP EliteBook 8570w (Nvidia Quadro K1000M) nahezu uneingeschränkt übernommen werden.
Auf die Gehäusequalitäten sind wir bereits beim Test des HP EliteBook 8570w mit Nvidia Quadro K1000M Grafik ausführlich eingegangen. Diese sollten grundsätzlich auf alle HP EliteBook 8570w übertragbar sein.

Beim aktuellen Testmodell haben wir allerdings einige Mängel festgestellt. Unter die Rubrik "Optik" fallen zwei Materialabplatzer an der Bodenabdeckung und auf der Handballenablage. Zudem lässt sich bei mittlerem Druck auf die Handballenablage links neben dem Touchpad ein lautes Knacken hervorrufen. Schwerwiegender sehen wir den vierten Fehler, der sich auf die generelle Standfestigkeit des Geräts auswirkt: An der vorderen rechten Ecke hängt das Chassis in der Luft und kippelt dadurch, sobald man die Hand auf der Handballenablage ablegt. Unterschiedliche Standfüße scheinen hier nicht der Grund dafür zu sein. Alle vier Makel sollten generell nicht vorkommen und dürfen erst recht nicht bei einem Gerät dieser Preisklasse auftreten. Da es sich beim Testsample augenscheinlich um originalverpackte Neuware handelt, wären das im Ernstfall klare Reklamationsgründe. Die recht hohe Anzahl an Mängeln führt zur Abwertung bei der Teilwertung Verarbeitung.

In der Ausstattungsliste führt HP immer noch drei verschiedene Displays auf. Das Einstiegsmodell mit einer Auflösung von 1.600 x 900 Bildpunkten haben wir bereits beim HP EliteBook 8570w B9D05AW-ABD (Nvidia Quadro K1000M) getestet. Beim aktuellen Testsample haben wir das "normale" FullHD-Display zur Verfügung. Sofort verfügbare Konfigurationen mit DreamColor Display (zum Beispiel LY558E) haben wir zum Testzeitpunkt bei den Händlern nicht gefunden. Auch lässt sich diese Option bei der Online-Konfiguration im HP Shop nicht auswählen.

Im Auslieferungszustand unterstützt das HP EliteBook 8570w mit FullHD-Display die gängige Auflösung mit 1.366 x 768 Bildpunkten nicht. Nach der in unserem FAQ-Artikel beschriebenen Anleitung lässt sich diese aber nachträglich hinzufügen. Wenn man diesen Weg nicht gehen möchte und einfachheitshalber zur nächsthöheren Auflösung greift (1.280 x 1.024 Bildpunkte), muss man mit etwas geringeren Frameraten von etwa 3-4 fps rechnen (getestet mit Tomb Raider und Hitman Absolution).
Die frontseitig angebrachten Lautsprecher sorgen für einen verhältnismäßig ausgewogenen und unverzerrten Klang, der auch Bässe und Mitten beinhaltet. Zwar kommt diese Lösung nicht an externe Boxen aus dem 10-Euro-Bereich heran, dennoch hat man hier Besseres verbaut, als man bei der Masse der Notebooks sonst so vorfindet. Die Maximallautstärke reicht auch für kleinere Präsentationen und lässt sich in 50 Stufen fein dosieren.
Die Leistungsaufnahme fällt mit 14,6 Watt im Minimum etwas niedriger und mit 94,3 Watt im Maximum etwas höher aus als beim Testmodell mit Nvidia Grafik. Das Netzteil ist mit einer Nennleistung von 120 Watt versehen und hat damit noch genügend Reserven zur Verfügung. Der beim Testmodell beigelegte Akku hat eine Kapazität von 75 Wh und soll eine besonders lange Lebensdauer besitzen.
Beim Battery Eater Readers Test (minimale Display-Helligkeit, alles aus, Energiesparprofil) erreicht das HP EliteBook 8570w eine Laufzeit von 6:41 Stunden. Das sind trotz etwas schwächerem Akku etwa 20 Minuten mehr als beim Vorgänger. Beim WLAN-Test (Displayhelligkeit 145 cd/m², Funk an, Energiesparprofil) und DVD-Test (maximale Helligkeit, Funk aus, Energiesparprofil) werden hingegen nahezu identische Werte erzielt. Beim Battery Eater Classic Test (alles an, Höchstleistungsprofil, maximale Display-Helligkeit) halbiert sich die Laufzeit in etwa. Mit 1 Stunde Netzunabhängigkeit ist die AMD Version deutlich kürzer unterwegs. Hier wirkt sich zum einen die höhere maximale Leistungsaufnahme als auch die im Akkubetrieb geringere Leistungsdrosselung negativ auf die mögliche Akkulaufzeit aus.

Die Tastaturmatte liegt fest auf, die Tasten sind im üblichen 19-mm-Raster und damit insgesamt groß ausgeführt. Als zu klein empfinden wir die Pfeiltasten, die zusätzlich auch noch sehr eng beieinanderliegen. Der Druckpunkt der Tasten ist klar definiert und das Anschlagsverhalten mit mittelkurzem Hub etwas hart aber akustisch zurückhaltend. Die Beschriftung ist kontraststark aufgebracht, wird aber bei ungünstigen Lichtverhältnissen nicht durch eine Tastaturbeleuchtung unterstützt. Insgesamt ist die Eingabe als sehr gut einzustufen, die meisten Vielschreiber sollten damit auf Anhieb zurechtkommen. HP 446399-001

Touchpad/ Pointstick
Das TouchPad ist relativ groß ausgeführt, bietet eine sehr angenehme Gleitfläche und reagiert nach individueller Konfiguration sehr gut auf die oft verwendeten Fingertipps. Standard-Funktionen und Mehrfingergesten wie Zoomen, Drehen, Blättern, Bildlauf und Co. werden unterstützt und die separat ausgeführten TouchPad-Tasten (drei) nehmen Eingaben sehr zuverlässig entgegen. Der alternativ zum TouchPad integrierte Pointstick verrichtet, wie bei HP gewohnt, seine Arbeit sehr präzise und zuverlässig. Die über die Tasten herausragende Stick-Höhe ist optimal und lässt ein sehr gutes Navigieren zu. Die dazugehörigen über dem TouchPad integrierten zusätzlichen Tasten sind ebenfalls sehr gut zu bedienen und bieten keinen Anlass zur Kritik. COMPAQ HSTNN-DB11

Ein WXGA-Display hat HP für die Workstation nicht im Angebot. Dieses ist nur für das HP EliteBook 8570p erhältlich. Wählen kann man daher insgesamt zwischen drei Displays. Zwei Bildschirme mit weiten Sichtwinkeln, hier ist entweder eine Auflösung mit 1.600 x 900 Bildpunkten (HD+, 200 cd/m², 60% CG) oder eine mit 1.920 x 1.080 Bildpunkten (FullHD, 220 cd/m², 60% CG) erhältlich, oder das DreamColor-Display (FullHD, 210 cd/m², 109% CG) mit besonders weiten Sichtwinkeln und einem hohen Farbraum. Alle drei Oberflächen sind matt und verfügen über eine LED-Hintergrundbeleuchtung (DreamColor RGB-LED). HP HSTNN-DB29

Unser Testmodell ist mit dem HD+-Einstiegs-Display ausgestattet und bietet damit vor allem für Anwender, denen eine Full-HD-Auflösung bei einer 15-Zoll-Diagonale Symbole, Icons und Schriften zu klein darstellt, einen guten Kompromiss aus Arbeitsfläche und nativer Darstellungsgröße. Das Panel stammt von LG und kann an unseren neun Messpunkten Helligkeitswerte von 254 cd/m² bis hin zu 300 cd/m² liefern. Das übertrifft die Herstellerangabe von 200 cd/m² deutlich und hinterlässt gleich einen positiven Eindruck. Die aus den Helligkeitsunterschieden zu den Rändern hin resultierende Ausleuchtung von 85% ist noch gut und fällt im regulären Praxisbetrieb nicht auf. Lediglich bei einfarbigen Bildinhalten lässt sich das helle Zentrum erkennen. HP HSTNN-FB05

The hinge is submerged in the base and the vent is directly below that. Asus adopts the typical architecture and aluminum unibody concept from the Zenbooks, but increases the screen diagonal from 13.3 to 14 inches. Consequently, the width and depth have also increased by roughly one centimeter. The key height, interfaces and the thicker lid result in a thickness of 21 mm rather than 18 mm from the UX31A.

The angular design and the dark, anodized respectively brushed aluminum cannot be mistaken for a Zenbook. The chassis not only makes a "hard and angular" impression, it is in fact as stiff as a board. This is also true to a very tight extent for the lid. Its surface is very firm, the hinge has a firm grip on the display and torsional forces which occur during rough handling barely have an effect on it. ASUS ZenBook U500 Battery

The material gives the surfaces a cool, metal-like feel. We could not dent the closed base plate anywhere. Two fans supply the casing's innards with cool air via a small row of air vents. The BU400VC has three millimeter high feet to prevent them from being clogged, for example on a smooth desk. As usual, Asus has not considered them in the device's size specifications.

"Fans" is the keyword that take us to the innards. While the UX31A only features one fan, our BU400VC has two of them. One is necessary due to the dedicated graphics card, which not every BU400 features (BU400A: HD 4000 alternative). The conventional, 2.5 inch SATA slot, the inserted RAM bar and the Wi-Fi module are easy to maintain considering it is an ultrabook. All this allows Asus or upgrade-eager users to configure the device with only HDDs or combinations of HDDs and mSATA SSDs to the same extent. We last saw such good maintenance options in the EliteBook Folio 9470m, Latitude 6430u and ThinkPad T430u. Connectivity

Like common for business devices, Asus does not omit Ethernet or VGA ports. The X1 Carbon is the only device that does not sport these interfaces. The ports are positioned very nicely on the chassis; Asus always uses the rear left and right area. Interfaces on the rear would be handy for frequent desktop use and would reduce the visible cable mess. The T430u and Latitude 6430u are the only devices that feature rear-positioned ports among the contenders. ASUS ZenBook UX51 Charger

Gigabit network and Advanced-N Wi-Fi cards have become standard in the meantime. Intel's Centrino Advanced-N 6235 not only supplies the Bluetooth 4.0 module, it also supports the extended 5 GHz frequency bandwidth (dual-band). This enables using the less busy frequency when interferences occur on the 2.5 band or when it is overloaded. The range proved to be very good although our router's signal was reduced to 50%. One bar was still displayed even 40 meters outside of the building and the contact was not disrupted when out of line of sight. A 3G/LTE modem is standardly not available for the BU400. As to security, the BU400VC features a fingerprint reader on the wrist rest in addition to the standard Kensington lock. The fingerprint reader can be mapped via the Asus Fingerprint tool. Then it is possible to easily login on the BU400VC with the finger. A TPM module is also installed and allows the unambiguous authentication of the ultrabook. The latter can be enabled and disabled in the BIOS, just like Intel's Anti-Theft. The HDD Protection tool is installed for configurations based on a HDD (BU400A). ASUS ZenBook UX51VZ Charger

Overall, the Latitude E6330 subnotebook is designed for professional office use. In Fujitsu's LifeBook S792 we find a direct competitor, which has a brighter, outdoor capable screen and a longer battery life with comparable (depending on the test) to somewhat better test results.

With their Latitude laptops, Dell wants to score points with business users in terms of performance, durability and scalability. Being 12.5-inches wide, the Dell Latitude E6320 is the smallest and lightest member of the Latitude E-family. Those who find this too small can go for one of the larger sister models. As usual with Dell, comprehensive configuration options are available to consumers. Our E6230 review device was equipped with a Core i5-3320M CPU, Intel HD Graphics 4000, 4 GB RAM and an SSD. Dell talks about a tri-metal case. Various metals are used for its production: a magnesium alloy, anodized aluminum at the display lid, and a powder-coated magnesium base. The strong hinges are manufactured from metal. The hinges' tension is so great that opening the laptop with just one hand is not possible. They cannot, however, entirely prevent wobbling after adjusting the opening angle. Two USB 3.0 ports and one eSATA/USB 2.0 combo socket are available to ensure fast data exchange with peripheral devices. External displays can be connected either analogously via VGA or digitally via HDMI. Dell dispensed with the DisplayPort directly at the case which is common in the business segment. Fortunately, ports that are often permanently occupied are located at the rear part of the two side edges and on the rear side. Nonetheless, right-handed people may sometimes have an advantage, as the exhaust air is routed out of the case interior on the left edge.

Regarding communication features, our Latitude E6230 has virtually everything that one may wish for. When a LAN cable is plugged in, the Intel 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection (10/100/1000MBit) enables Ethernet connections with Gigabit speed. The Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (abgn) also supports WLAN connections in Standard-n. Additionally, with the Dell Wireless 5630 (EVD0-HSPA) Mobile Broadband Mini-Card (composite WWAN device) Network Adapter, a broadband modem is on board as well. Finally, via Bluetooth version 4.0, data can be exchanged with small mobile devices. Security
As is right and proper for a business device, a few security features have been built into our review model. In addition to the Kensington Lock, we find a SmartCard reader in the case. Also, a Trusted Platform module enables clear identification of the device from afar. Accessories
In addition to necessary accessories like the power supply and the battery, we find a Resource Media CD, a Windows 7 SP1 64-Bit DVD, a short manual and a lot of printed information. If the Latitude E6230 is ordered from the online shop, the user can order plenty of accessories with it right away. The offers range from external mice, keyboards and adapters to external displays, batteries, power supplies and docking stations. Compatible docking stations offered by Dell's online shop are the E-Series Legacy Expansion Port for 58.99 Euros (~$77), the expanded E-Port II for 169.99 Euros (~$223) and the simple E-Port II for 149.99 Euros (~$197). Maintenance
Maintenance is very simple. After removing a single screw, the bottom panel can be taken off surprisingly easily. Then the user gets access to the inner components. Even the fan can be reached with ease.

Warranty
By default, Dell grants three years of ProSupport for the Latitude E6230 top model reviewed here. According to Dell, this includes on-site service after remote diagnosis, technical support around the clock, premium support for hardware and software issues and a central contact partner for escalation management. Keyboard
Our review device's internal anti-bacterial keyboard has a chocolate design (no chiclet design) and can be lit in four stages via backlight. The keyboard itself is of appropriate size; it offers a standard layout with slightly detached arrow keys and three additional buttons for volume control. The keys are sufficiently large; they have a slightly concave surface and a nice surface feel. Due to its mechanical characteristics - a rather short stroke distance, yet with a clear feedback - the keyboard is suitable for extensive writing. Asus integrates a 500 GB hard drive into the subnotebook. The ST500LT012-9WS142 is provided by Seagate and runs at 5,400 rpm. HD Tune shows a decent performance. The average transfer rate of 74 MB/sec and an access time of 19 ms are neither below nor above average. The CrystalDiskMark results are slightly higher. Not every 5,400 rpm model reaches 91 MB/sec for sequential reading and 85 MB/sec for sequential writing. ASUS F55VDR Battery

As far as our experience goes the everyday Windows use is a bit disappointing. Especially during multi-tasking the hard drive is the limiting factor. For example; copying data, downloading updates and installing applications at the same time, result in a very slow response time. Compared to a 7,200 rpm model or a fast SSD the hard drive does not stand a chance. In other words: The VivoBook U38DT is not ideal for a power user. The performance for the average user however is acceptable. ASUS F55VD Battery

Because of the second-class hard drive and the pretty slow CPU the performance of the overall system is in the bottom third. 1,714 points for the PCMark 7 won't impress anybody. With this result the 13-inch device can only compete against notebooks with a cheap Intel B-series processor (Pentium B950 to B980). Among others we have the Lenovo IdeaPad G580-MBBG3GE (1,670 points), the HP Compaq Presario CQ58-148SG (1,700 points), the HP Pavilion g6-2200sg (1,723 points) or the Lenovo IdeaPad N581-MBA4YGE (1,742 points). Gamers should avoid the VivoBook U38DT. The low clock of the A8-4555M pulls the performance down to a level that only modest and/or older games can be played with more than 25 fps. From the 25 tested titles only 10 were fairly playable. Most of the time the user has to live with minimum details and a slightly reduced resolution. ASUS F55U Battery

Keyboard
The non-backlit Chiclet keyboard is of ample size (28.25 cm x 10.5 cm) and feels similar to the backlit version as found on the larger Vaio T15. This means that the keys are unfortunately quite soft and shallow with poor overall feedback. In fact, feedback while typing is so low that it can be easy to miss a letter or two at first.
